S.A.F.E. by Design: Recommendations for AI Companions in Education

At AI for Education, we have been speaking about the risk of AI companionship since 2024, so it has been an honor for our CPO Corey Layne Crouch and CEO Amanda Bickerstaff to serve on the task force for the EDSAFE AI Alliance to help develop: "S.A.F.E. by Design: Policy, Research, and Practice Recommendations for AI Companions in Education".

To meet this moment, we need more than just data privacy rules—we need evidence-based, intentional, and ethical guardrails to protect our students' emotional well-being and prevent tech dependency.

Inside this new report, you will find:

✔️ Actionable recommendations for K-12 leaders and policymakers at all levels.

✔️ Design guidelines rooted in the Learning Sciences.

✔️ A roadmap for future research and collaboration.

This report highlights the urgency of making choices today to protect young people from the potential harms of over reliance on GenAI for mental health, wellbeing, and companionship
