Education in 2028: AIEd Forecasting Competition seeks the best predictions on AI's educational impact through 2028, offering $25K in prizes to create a fuller picture of the future of education.

Cengage Report: Accountability in Career Readiness

Cengage's 2025 career readiness report reveals only 51% of graduates felt they had sufficient AI skills when applying for jobs. While 79% of educators agree students need AI experience before graduation, only 37% believe teaching these skills is their responsibility—leaving graduates underprepared as 46% of employers cite AI as reshaping entry-level hiring.

  • Only 30% of 2025 graduates have secured full-time jobs related to their education

  • Among graduates who felt their program failed to prepare them for the workforce, 56% cited job-specific skills as the top missing skillset

  • AI is expected to create 78 million jobs globally by 2030

Why AI still struggles to tell fact from belief

A Stanford study found that AI models can't tell the difference between what's true and what people believe is true—a critical gap since effective personalized assistance in education and other sensitive domains requires identifying users' beliefs and underlying concerns. This means users must recognize these limitations and provide the necessary context to use AI effectively.

  • 24 leading models were tested on 13,000 questions

  • Even the newest reasoning-focused AI systems fail to acknowledge users' false beliefs, correcting them rather than recognizing their perspective

  • AI lacks theory of mind—LLMs excel at reciting facts but can't build accurate mental models of user beliefs

OpenAI Announces More Updates

OpenAI announced two major releases last week: GPT-5.1, a more conversational AI upgrade, and a Teen Safety Blueprint with age-appropriate restrictions—creating tension between making AI more engaging while preventing teen emotional dependency.

  • GPT-5.1 adapts its tone and reasoning depth to match user needs; comes with 8 personality presets: default, professional, friendly, candid, quirky, efficient, plus existing nerdy and cynical options

  • Teen Safety Blueprint establishes 5 core protections for under-18 users: age prediction, content restrictions (suicide/graphic material/dangerous challenges), default to under-18 mode when uncertain, parental controls, and crisis interventions. OpenAI hasn't clarified whether teens will have access to GPT-5.1's conversational features or a restricted version
