New York PIX11: “How AI Will Effect Your Student’s Education”

Yesterday, our CEO, Amanda Bickerstaff appeared on New York’s PIX11 to discuss AI in education as students head back to school (luckily without a surprise debate this time). Here are a few of the highlights:

✔️ AI is here to stay.

It's the fastest growing consumer technology ever, and students 18-24 are already the top users of chatbots in the US. This is the first time we can build with technology just by speaking or texting, which opens up incredible possibilities (and risks) for teachers, students, and families.

✔️ It's time to reframe the cheating conversation.

Research shows 60-70% of high schoolers already engage in some form of cheating behavior every year. AI makes it easier, but it also gives us an opportunity to make our teaching more engaging, fit-for-purpose, and differentiated. When we build assessment practices that model the real world, they're actually harder for students to cheat on.

✔️ Work WITH students, not against them.

The most successful schools we work with involve students in creating their AI guidelines. When we acknowledge that we're all learning about GenAI together, students become invested in the solution rather than trying to work around it. This collaborative approach helps students understand that GenAI tools should further their thinking, not replace it.

✔️ Building AI literacy is easier than you think.

You can build these skills in just a couple of hours when you create safe, intentional spaces to learn. We see this every time we work with students, teachers, and administrators across the country. And parents can learn right alongside their kids.

For those with children heading back to school, check out AI for Education's Parent Guide for some practical strategies and resources for navigating this with your kids (link in the comments along with the youtube link to the segment).
