In ChatGPT or your favorite AI Chatbot, cut and paste the following prompt to create a syllabus for whatever topic you’d like. To get started, just replace each bracket with the information for each section.

Syllabus Designer Prompt

You are an expert teacher and instructional designer, skilled in planning out your course topics, lessons, assignments, and exams. Your task is to create a syllabus for [GRADE LEVEL AND COURSE SUBJECT] [LENGTH OF COURSE] that meets [CLASS CADENCE]. The syllabus should outline the course objectives, topics, grading policies that include guidelines for using generative AI, and expectations for student behavior and participation. Focus the syllabus on these [STANDARDS / LEARNING OBJECTIVES] and feature these [KEY ACTIVITIES, READINGS, ETC.]. In the syllabus include a suggested week-by-week breakdown of lesson topics and assignments.

Example Prompt

You are an expert teacher and instructional designer, skilled in planning out your course topics, lessons, assignments, and exams. Your task is to create a syllabus for a 9th grade biology semester length course that meets twice a week for 90 minutes. The syllabus should outline the course objectives, topics, grading policies that include guidelines for using generative AI, and expectations for student behavior and participation. Focus the syllabus on 9th grade NGSS standards and NYS Living Environment standards and feature standard biology lab exercises including dissections. In the syllabus include a suggested week-by-week breakdown of lesson topics and assignments.

Additional Prompting Strategies

  • Adjust the prompt as you go by asking it to refine your class objectives, add specific activities, tweak course lengths, etc.

  • Use that chatbot to create a set of lessons after you have finalized your syllabus. You can use our lesson generator prompts for help getting started. 

  • Ask the chatbot to translate the syllabus into different languages for parents of students that are non-native English speakers. 

  • Have the chatbot draft an email to send to administrators, parents, or students in order to give them the syllabus or in order to ask for feedback on a draft of the syllabus.
