About This Course
Students are already using generative AI (GenAI). Many are using it daily, and often without guidance from a knowledgeable adult. As a result, students are left exposed to GenAI's risks for thinking and learning without receiving its benefits. GenAI is a powerful technology that students should not be left to navigate on their own. This course gives you the research, frameworks, and ready-to-use resources to guide students toward GenAI-literate decision-making they can carry into any situation, at school and at home.
This course builds on the foundations from our GenAI Literacy in Practice: The Essentials for Every Educator microcourse but is also designed to stand alone. It includes a brief recap of key concepts so educators can start here without missing critical context.
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Explain the growing need for student GenAI literacy by examining workforce, policy, and research data
Recognize common patterns and behavioral profiles in student GenAI use, and what that diversity means for teaching GenAI literacy
Describe why mindsets are necessary for students to make informed decisions about their own GenAI use
Apply the SEE Framework's knowledge, mindsets, and practices to a realistic student GenAI scenario
Plan a class agreement that gives students a hand in shaping the norms around GenAI use in your classroom

This course alternates between short video segments and hands-on activities across 120 minutes.

Examine the key research, policy, training, and workforce data about students and GenAI that establish a clear need for GenAI literacy
Where Students Are Now: Usage vs Literacy
Explore how students are actually using GenAI, why confidence with GenAI is not the same as literacy, and nine evidence-based profiles of student GenAI users
Defining GenAI Competency
Learn how AI for Education's SEE Framework defines GenAI literacy and apply its five mindsets to a student who is over-relying on GenAI
Applying GenAI Literacy: The SEE Snapshot
Use the SEE Snapshot to trace how knowledge and mindsets shape the practices a student or educator chooses at a real decision point
