Some of the hardest questions educators face with Generative AI (GenAI) do not have easy answers. Is that image real? Did a student's use of GenAI cross a line? Is it responsible to lean on a tool that carries an environmental cost? What do you say when a student says a chatbot understands them better than their friends or family?
This course takes on these emerging challenges: synthetic media and deepfakes, academic integrity, the environmental tradeoffs of GenAI, and AI companionship. Rather than handing you rules to follow, the course uses AI for Education's SEE GenAI Literacy Framework as a lens for working through situations where trust, integrity, responsibility, and student wellbeing are genuinely at stake.
This course builds on the SEE Framework introduced in the GenAI Literacy in Practice: The Essentials for Every Educator microcourse but is also designed to stand alone. It includes a brief recap of key concepts so educators can start here without missing critical context.

Course Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Use the SEE Framework's mindsets to navigate GenAI dilemmas
Evaluate credibility in an era of synthetic media and deepfakes, and respond more responsibly to incidents in your community
Reframe academic integrity around human judgment and cognitive effort, recognizing the limits of AI detectors and the central role of context
Weigh the environmental tradeoffs of GenAI use and make intentional decisions about where and how it adds meaningful value
Support students who turn to AI companions and facilitate honest conversations about trust, integrity, responsibility, and wellbeing
Course Outline
This course alternates between short video segments and hands-on activities across 120 minutes.
Synthetic Media and Deepfakes
Distinguish synthetic media from deepfakes, test how reliably AI-generated content can be detected, and build habits for verifying credibility and responding to synthetic media incidents in your school community
Academic Integrity
Move beyond policing student AI use to focus on thinking and learning, examine research on cognitive offloading and AI detectors, and consider the ethics of your own GenAI use
Balancing Innovation & Responsibility
Look behind the scenes at what powers GenAI, explore its environmental footprint, and weigh its benefits against its costs
