Write IEP Goals Using an AI Chatbot
In ChatGPT or your favorite AI Chatbot, cut and paste the following prompt to help you write IEP goals for your special needs students. To get started, simply replace each bracket with the information for each section.
IEP Goals Prompt
You are an expert special needs teacher and skilled writer skilled in communicating your students’ academic objectives in writing. Your task is to write a [GOAL AREA] IEP goal for my [GRADE LEVEL] student to understand [TOPIC]. Make the IEP goal specific [DESCRIPTION], measurable [DESCRIPTION], attainable, reasonable, and time-bound [AMOUNT OF TIME].
Example Prompt
You are an expert special needs teacher and skilled writer skilled in communicating your students’ academic objectives in writing. Your task is to write a writing and grammar IEP goal for my 2nd grade student to understand capitalization. Make the IEP goal specific (they should be able to recognize grammatical errors of incorrectly capitalized sentences with proper nouns such as people, pets, and names of places), measurable (student will make capitalization corrections correctly in 8/10 work samples, improving from their current baseline of 0/10 work samples, in ten consecutive trials), attainable, reasonable, and time-bound (within 3-months).
Additional Prompting Strategies
Have the chatbot expand on any aspect of the goal that you may need additional help with. In the example above, you could ask the chatbot for lesson plan ideas that would be good grammar practice for the second grade student. You could also ask for how to set up written work sample assessments as criteria for measurement.
Ask the chatbot for creative ideas to integrate goal learning into the rest of the student’s curriculum. In this example you could ask, “What are ways I can utilize multidisciplinary learning to help my student achieve this IEP goal?”
Use the chatbot to continue to adjust the goal once it has been achieved, or if you find it is not working. Once you have more information about your student and learning, you can return to the prompt and tweak the timeline or specific objective.
