North Carolina Publishes AI Guidance for K12

North Carolina become the 4th state to publish guidance on AI adoption in schools. We had a chance to speak with Vera Cubero from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction who spearheaded its development. We talked about how this guidance came to be, key areas of focus, and their plan to build buy-in.

The TL:DW (too long didn’t watch) highlights:

  • The guidance is structured around North Carolina's Digital Learning Plan, organized around 5 key areas, which provides a great base.

  • The guidance includes a significant amount of practical resources and recommendations for implementation, including AI for Education’s K12 Roadmap, GenAI Academic Policy Guidelines, and Prompt Library (we are thrilled to be included).

  • There is a major emphasis on including vetted, trusted, and K12-focused resources for school leaders and staff and student training, which is designed to cut through the noise of lesser quality material available online.

  • The guidance provides recommendations on citing sources and AI detectors.

  • The steering committee also included data privacy and cybersecurity experts to ensure those components were addressed.

  • Guidance will be disseminated through multiple channels, including leadership meetings, webinars, and training by regional consultants like Stacy Lovdahl.

  • The document is intended to be a living document, updated regularly.
